Unhelpful thinking patterns are habitual ways of interpreting situations that often distort reality and lead to unnecessary stress, anxiety, or negative emotions. These patterns can trap us in cycles of self-doubt and unproductive behavior.
Putting Thoughts on Trial is a cognitive-behavioral therapy technique designed to challenge and reframe unhelpful thinking patterns. It encourages you to treat your negative thoughts like a court case: you gather evidence for and against the thought, assess its validity, and determine whether it holds up under scrutiny. This process helps you distinguish between facts and assumptions, reducing the emotional impact of irrational beliefs.
How does it work?

You’ll play three roles: defense attorney, prosecutor, and judge to see if your thought holds up in court.
Defense vs. Prosecution
Gather evidence for and against your thought. But here’s the catch: only solid, verifiable facts allowed – no wild guesses, opinions, or mind-reading!
Judge Time
Weigh the evidence and deliver your verdict. Is the thought fair and accurate? Could there be other ways to look at the situation? Court is in session!
Reminder
The goal of this exercise isn’t to always prove your original thought is negative or distorted. Sometimes self-critical thoughts can be challenged, but itβs also totally fine if you realize your thought is valid. What matters is taking the time to evaluate and understand your thoughts, so you can approach them with more clarity and confidence.
